Multitalented Derek Powazek Embraces the Lomographic Blur
@ :: interviews ::
Jan 08 2009, 03:56 (UTC+0) | Derek Powazek is a professional amateur photographer. As the cofounder of JPG Magazine, he publishes the work of other photographers. He has a BA in Photojournalism from the University of California at Santa Cruz. His work has appeared in Wired and San Francisco Magazine, and has been honored by awards from the Society of News Design, the NPPA, and the Photobloggies. Working the web since 1995, Derek Powazek is the creator of many award-winning websites, a couple of which still exist. He also just happens to have a Lomo LC-A and can be tempermental in the heat. My Holga melted in the heat, and my DSLR was just too bulky to lug around, so I wound up shooting with Heather's Lomo LC-A. A webdesigner, a print designer, a writer and a photographer? Yup! When you think about it, all three things are about putting on a performance for the eye - how people see, and visual thinking. You also are the founder and editor of the successful jpg Magazine, how have things progressed from the beginning? Cofounder! My wife, Heather Champ, and I founded JPG Magazine two years ago to throw a spotlight on all the incredible work being done online that never sees the printed page. What we've discovered is that, for people like us who live online, print has only gotten more special, not less. There's still nothing like holding an amazing photo in your hand. JPG has done so well, we're about to go even bigger. More pages, more often, in more places. Look for more announcements on that next month! New York City in the Summer heat with a Lomo? Tell us about Apple Sweat? Heather and I went to NYC on vacation just in time for the biggest heat wave since 1936. My Holga melted in the heat, and my DSLR was just too bulky to lug around, so I wound up shooting with Heather's Lomo LC-A. I'd used it before, but never really concentrated on it. It was just the perfect camera for that moment. Was the Apple Sweat book the first time you used a Lomo LC-A? No, but it was the first time I exclusively used a Lomo for a project. And I liked it! What the Hell is Lomography? Simple version: Shooting with a Lomo. More complex version: Loving grain, saturated colors, and the joy of making images that are more emotional than logical. What turns you on about the Lomo camera? For me, it's how discreet it is. I've never really used any other rangefinders, but the street shooters know what a blessing it is to just set the focus and shoot from the hip. And in NYC, in the blistering heat, nobody wanted a camera pointed at them. Shooting from the hip allowed me to get shots I'd never have gotten with a camera planted on my face. What turns you off about Lomo? I'm such a contrarian. When I was in college and all the art snobs were shooting with toy cameras and Lomos, I rebelled by going in the opposite direction: pristine, sharp, traditional 35mm. Now that I'm getting older, I realize, wow, there really is something great about embracing the blur. What do you know about the Lomo community? I know that they're my kinda people! If there's one thing I can't stand about photographers in general, it's the obsessive attention to tiny details no one really cares about: f-stops and what kind of "glass" you shoot with. The Lomo folks I've met are more like me - we care about the photo, the moment, more than the gear. Do you shoot with any preferred film? Whatever's cheapest. What do you like to shoot? People are by far the hardest, and most rewarding, subject matter. Especially people who don't smile at you. People being real. Your most lomofabulous moment? I guess it'd have to be that last trip to NYC! Most embarrassing Lomo moment? There was this one woman. An elderly Asian woman selling sunglasses in Chinatown. She was just so perfect, I had to get a photo, but I was way too close. I turned and shot anyway. She immediately stood up and started screaming at me, wagging her finger. The word on her hat was "Angel." Who are your biggest sources of inspiration and why? My wife, Heather, who sees the world from angles that always surprise me. What famous celebrity would you like to shoot with your Lomo? Jon Stewart. He makes every day more bearable. Monday through Thursday, anyway. Or Angelina Jolie, because, well, do I really have to say why? If you could change an aspect of your photography what would it be? I'd be braver. There are so many photos I wish I'd taken but didn't because I was shy or scared of getting yelled at. What’s the best thing about being you? I feel really lucky right now. JPG Magazine is growing at an amazing rate. And I'm the founder of a magazine publishing company 8020 Publishing which is just starting out and full of potential. Plus my wife is smokin hot. Finally, what is the secret behind your lomography? Four magic words: "Growl like a tiger." Photography by Derek Powazek. For the complete printed version check out the Apple Sweat book. With our ever expanding Box network international organization our Lomo agents are everywhere. You might be under surveillance right now! Our agents are always on the prowl searching for lomographers with an eye for style. You may be contacted when you least expect it. Until then, Live, love + Lomo baby!
